Being a universal solvent, water dissolves minerals - mainly calcium and magnesium - as it moves through soil and rock.These dissolved minerals are the two factors most responsible for hard water.

Several methods have been invented to decrease water hardness.

They are very expensive and not fully effective. Like the ion exchange method, for instance. The necessary equipment is costly. Water excessively saturated with sodium becomes unhealthy. Corrosion processes are speeded up.

In turn, reverse osmosis purifies water superbly and reduces its hardness. Yet it is not economical in small household installations where high efficiency is required.

A variety of chemical means can be used, but the side effects are varied and unwelcome. Further still, these methods are often not very efficient.
